For Mark Zukowski, going against the advice of others has turned out to be the right move more often than not. His career as a genetic research scientist has seen him disprove naysayers along the way.
"People told me 'don't follow genetics, it's a dead field,'" he says. "Or, 'don't go into industry, there are no jobs,' but I found wonderful opportunities for basic research."
He met no such resistance when he came to Georgetown. It was a logical first choice for someone with an interest in biology. "I got interested in biology in high school, reading about viruses and bacteria," Zukowski says. "I was fascinated by how something so tiny could be so powerful. And Georgetown had a renowned program."
