Could Economic Crisis Push Schools Toward Strength?

Members of Georgetown’s academic community gathered for the annual Fall Faculty Convocation to watch prominent Mexican educator Rafael Rangel receive this year’s honorary degree and to focus on the aims of education in these “times of crisis.”

As many were reminded by the event’s speakers about the current economic climate – the government takeover of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae; the merging and collapse of financial institutions; and the continual dips in the Dow, NASDAQ and S&P 500, Georgetown President John J. DeGioia and Rangel spoke about the relevance of colleges and universities during economic downturns.
