When Seung Shim Ko traveled from Korea to Washington this past summer to sharpen her English-speaking skills at Georgetown, she expected her language proficiency to blossom from classroom interaction. But there was also the unexpected bonus – picking up the nuances of U.S. English and American cultural aspects through a conversation program at the university.
“We talk about different things,” Ko said referring to conversations with her partner Susan Hougen, who volunteers through the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program. “She told me about a baptizing ritual she went to, and we began to talk about the Korean custom that celebrates a baby’s same moment. We have those kinds of conversations.”
