Meet the Junior Bakers

Julia Cai is an economics major and chemistry minor. She is a proud Midwesterner from Fargo, North Dakota. At Georgetown, Julia has served as an assistant news editor and staff writer for The Hoya, a tutor for young men at the Oak Hill youth detention center, and a facilitator for the Kids 2 college program. She is also a contributing writer for College magazine.  During the summers of 2007 and 2008, she was a communications intern at Microsoft. This past summer, she taught English to children in rural China through a Learning Enterprise program. Julia continues to explore her interest in print publications, technology and marketing.



Cristina Cardenal is pursuing a major in American Studies and a minor in Art History. She is currently studying abroad at Georgetown's Villa le Balze in Florence, Italy. When she returns in the spring, she will continue to actively participate as a member of the Georgetown Admissions Ambassador Program (GAAP), a leader for New Student Orientation (NSO), and a grillmaster in Georgetown University Grilling Society (GUGS). For almost two years, she has been interning with The Patton Group, a public relations, marketing, and events firm, both in her hometown of Miami and in Washington, DC. This past summer she also worked in Georgetown's Office of Strategic Development, which allowed her to give back to her beloved Georgetown and experience the business side of the institution. In the future, she hopes to combine her passions for film, art, and popular culture with her interest in public relations and strategy.


Rebecca Gessler is pursuing a double major in Spanish and Comparative Literature (Spanish and German) and is an aspiring French minor. She interned at Zoom Media and Marketing in New York during the summer of 2009, and this fall, she is studying abroad in Strasbourg, France. At Georgetown, Rebecca plays with the women’s club basketball team, coaches girl's recreation basketball, hosts her own radio show, and serves as a board member of the German Club. Rebecca is a freelance web designer, and services a wide variety of clients. She is a 1 woman team, leading projects from contract creation to client training. In her free time, Rebecca loves to practice Krav Maga, the Israeli army’s hand to hand combat system, as well as go to the gym and spend time at home in North Salem, NY with her family and mini zoo of pets.


Brad Glasser is pursuing a major in American Studies with a double minor Theology and French. In addition to the Baker Scholar Program, Brad works full time as the Chief Operating Officer of Students of Georgetown, Incorporated, the nation's largest entirely student-run non-profit corporation. Brad continues to pursue his passions in his spare time as a member of the Mask and Bauble Dramatic Society, New Student Orientation, and Blue and Gray Tour Guides, and Georgetown Superfood, a co-ed a capella group. In the future, Brad hopes to pursue a career in International Business or Corporate Law.



Trevor Jaikissoon is pursuing an English major and a Government minor. Last summer Trevor was an intern in the Frauds Bureau at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. At Georgetown Trevor is the Chair for the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access’s Peer Mentors, a contributing writer and former Managing Editor for the Georgetown University Publication, The Fire This Time, a Career Information Specialist at the Georgetown University Career Education Center, a member of Hilltop Consultants, and is a member of the Georgetown Aspiring Minority Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs. Organizational development and writing are two of Trevor’s greatest passions.  This past summer Trevor was a Resident Assistant for the Georgetown Community Scholars Program. Trevor would like to pursue a career in the Sports and Entertainment industry, most likely in talent representation.


Julia Lovett is pursuing an English major and a minor in Justice and Peace Studies.  On campus, Julia is heavily engaged in community service and outreach efforts through the Center for Social Justice.  She was one of two coordinators for Georgetown’s 2009 Community Service Day, which sent 600 first-year students to volunteer at twenty different sites throughout DC; Julia is also President of the Georgetown University Urban Debate League Alliance, which organizes volunteer judges for middle and high school urban debate league tournaments.  Julia’s penchant for service has been reinforced by summer internships doing resource development and event planning for nonprofit organizations like the Lupus Foundation of America, Greater Washington Chapter and the Julia C. Hester House in Houston, Texas.  Her favorite pastimes include traveling, cooking, running, and exploring DC on her bike.  Julia is open-minded about career possibilities, but is leaning toward law school.   


Brian Miller is a Computer Science major with an Economics minor.  In August 2008, he co-founded CollegeLifeDC.com, a review site dedicated to helping DC college students share consumer experiences and learn about local businesses.  Last summer, while continuing development of College Life DC, he worked on the Search Engine Optimization team at BuyerZone, a quote request service in Boston.  At Georgetown, Brian is a board member of the Pep Band, the Georgetown Entrepreneurial Organization, and Georgetown’s chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery. He is also involved in New Student Orientation and Catholic Campus Ministry.  After graduation, he hopes to find a career that utilizes his interests in entrepreneurship, computer science, and the Web.
 


Becca Rawson is an American Studies major with minors in Psychology and Spanish. This summer she studied marketing, financial accounting, and other business disciplines at the NYU Stern School of Business. At Georgetown, she is a Marketing Project Manager for the Georgetown Journal of International Affairs, a Career Assistant at the Career Education Center, and a member of DC Reads and Alpha Phi Omega. Becca has previously worked for the Lower East Side Business Improvement District in New York City as a Marketing Assistant. In 2008, she pioneered the “Every Last Sunday” Art Walk, which guides hundreds of tourists every month through the various contemporary art galleries in lower Manhattan.  Becca is currently developing her interests in marketing, brand management and public relations and intends to pursue an MBA after graduation.



Laura Shen is pursuing a major in Political Economy and a certificate in African Studies. She transferred to Georgetown sophomore year from McGill University in Montreal, where she played varsity lacrosse and was awarded Leading Offensive Player. Upon Laura's arrival to Georgetown, she joined Corp Accounting. She was the store accountant for Vittal Vittles and More Uncommon Grounds and this year serves as Accounting's Director of Personnel. On campus, she is also an Orientation Advisor, member of the Honor Council's Sanction Reduction Board, and club lacrosse player. This past summer, Laura worked as the marine science instructor at Briarwood Summer Camp on Cape Cod and was responsible for developing weekly lesson plans, which included shark dissections, kayak excursions and nightly entertainment. After traveling to Ghana during the summer of 2006, Laura developed a strong interest in micro-finance and non-governmental organizations. She is currently in her second year of Swahili language classes and is excited about immersing herself in the East African culture when studying abroad in Kenya this spring. Laura looks forward to business opportunities that will develop her skills, in hopes of one day creating her own non-governmental organization.



Derick Stace-Naughton, of Madison, Wisconsin, is pursuing a double major in Physics and English.  At Georgetown, Derick is the first Student Fellow for the Program on Science in the Public Interest, has served on the Board of Directors for Mask & Bauble Dramatic Society, and co-founded Students for the Awareness of Bleeding Disorders.  Through Students for the Awareness of Bleeding Disorders, Derick developed and lobbied for a Congressional resolution which proposes a new screening mechanism for bleeding disorders.  This resolution was introduced to the United States House of Representatives as H.Con.Res.147, with bipartisan support and the endorsement of several national advocacy groups and corporations.  Last summer, Derick worked in the Legislative Affairs department of CUNA Mutual Group and completed his third internship with Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.  After graduation, Derick would like to pursue a career in law.
