Do I need to take a language placement exam?

Q: Do I need to take a language placement exam?

A: If you have previous experience in a language, yes, you can and probably should take a placement exam. But it is difficult to give a general answer to this question, since each language department handles its placement process differently. The most important thing is to read and follow the language placement guidelines for the language(s) that you have studied (and not get distracted by what somebody else is saying about some other language!). If you are confused about how to proceed after you have read the placement guidelines for your language, contact either your dean or the departmental representative listed in the language placement guidelines themselves.
