Science and Engineering
General Information
Georgetown University is pleased to be a partner institution with The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Columbia University in the “3-2 Combined Plan” joint degree program. Columbia's program, the first dual-degree engineering program instituted in the United States, is designed to provide students with the opportunity to receive both a B.A. degree from their home institution and a B.S. degree from Columbia Engineering in five years.
Another available option is the 4-2 B.A/B.S. degree program. This is designed to allow students to graduate from their liberal arts college with a B.A. degree and then transfer to Columbia Engineering to complete a B.S. degree in two years. Students follow the same course of study at Georgetown University as those completing the 3-2 requirements.
The Curriculum
While technically students can enroll in any undergraduate degree program at Georgetown and still qualify for the Combined Plan Program, degree programs in the sciences (particularly physics) and math are the most compatible.
All students must complete the following Georgetown and pre-engineering coursework prior to applying:
1. All general education requirements
2. All requirements for the major
3. The following pre-engineering requirements:
• Calculus I
• Calculus II
• Multivariable Calculus
• Ordinary Differential Equations
• Mechanics
• Variations, Fluids, and Waves
• General Chemistry I
• Microeconomics
• Computer Science I
Students enroll in additional pre-engineering requirements depending on their intended engineering major. Georgetown University offers all the pre-requisite courses that will lead to any of the following engineering majors:
• Civil Engineering
• Earth and Environmental Engineering
• Engineering Management Systems
• Engineering Mechanics
• Mechanical Engineering
• Materials Science and Engineering
• Industrial Engineering
• Operations Research with Financial Engineering
Students interested in applying to the following specialties may have to take 1 or 2 courses away from Georgetown (e.g., during summer):
• Biomedical Engineering
• Chemical Engineering
• Computer Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
Application and Admissions
The Combined Plan Program is not a major at Georgetown University. Students apply to and enroll in a major as do all other students. Students do not apply to the Combined Plan Program until February of their junior or senior year. We encourage students to declare their intention to the Dean’s Office as early as possible to facilitate advising and support of the application process.
Guaranteed admission into The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science’s undergraduate Combined Plan Program will be offered to applicants who have met the following requirements.
1. Applicants must have been enrolled at Georgetown for at least the past 2 years.
2. Applicants must receive an overall GPA and a pre-engineering GPA of 3.0 or higher.
3. Applicants must receive 3 favorable recommendations: from your College Dean and one each from a science and math professor at Georgetown.
4. Applicants must have successfully completed, by the end of the spring semester, a course load that includes the following:
• all prerequisite courses listed in the Pre-Combined Plan Curriculum Guide for one’s intended major.
• the major and distribution requirements prescribed by one’s home institution.
