History Professor Receives ILHA Book of the Year Award

June 5, 2015—Professor of History Joseph McCartin and his co-editors have been awarded the International Labor History Association 2014 Book of the Year Award for their volume of edited essays, Workers in Hard Times (University of Illinois Press, 2014). 

Workers in Hard Times offers historical perspectives on workers, capitalism, and the “Great Recession.” Its twelve essays cover North America, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, and Asia “to demonstrate how workers and states have responded to those shifts and to their disempowering effects on labor.”

McCartin, director of Georgetown’s Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor, is an expert on U.S. labor, social and political history. He teaches courses in 20th Century U.S. Labor History, U.S. Since 1945, America Between the Wars, Modern U.S. State and Society, and 20th Century U.S. Social History. He is also the author of Collision Course: Ronald Reagan, the Air Traffic Controllers, and The Strike that Changed America.
