• Marcia Chatelain Receives 2021 Lawrence W. Levine Award from the Organization of American Historians

  Marcia Chatelain, professor in the Department of History and the Department of African American Studies, is the recipient of the Organization of American Historians’ (OAH) 2021 Lawrence W. Levine Award for her book Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black America. This award is given annually for the best book in American cultural history.

• Book by African American Studies Professor Selected for Prestigious Choice Reviews Award

  Black Cultural Production After Civil Rights, edited by Department of African American Studies professor Robert Patterson, Ph.D., was recently selected as a Choice Reviews Outstanding Academic Title for 2020. The collection of essays, from a variety of scholars, examines the significance of the 1970s to Black studies and Black culture.

• Professor Robert Patterson Discusses H.R.40 Bill, Offers Suggestions for Reparations

Robert Patterson, a professor in the Department of African American Studies whose research focuses on Black cultural production, racial politics and the legacies of slavery in the United States, explains why this bill is a positive step towards the creation of a more equitable society.

• Young Alumnus Continues Fight for LGBTQ, Civil Rights During Pandemic

  LGBTQ youth advocate Trevor O’Connor (C’20) believes fighting for civil rights in the time of COVID-19 is more important than ever, no matter how it is done.

  “A great analogy I’ve heard about advocacy during the current moment is that of a highway,” says O’Connor, an advocate for LGBTQ youth. “There are multiple lanes – frontline protesting, information gathering, research, being a shoulder to lean on, educating family members, donating, etc. – and it doesn’t matter what lane you’re in as long as you’re moving forward.”
