American Studies Program Kicks off 50th Anniversary Celebrations

May 29, 2018 – The American Studies Program at Georgetown College celebrates 50 years since its founding with an alumni luncheon this week in Boston, kicking off a year of events across the country to commemorate the program’s golden anniversary.

The luncheon will feature remarks by Dean Christopher Celenza, Associate Teaching Professor Erika Seamon, and Richie Mullaney (C’18), a recent graduate and American studies major who will discuss his senior thesis project, Forgetting Founders Day: How the Americanization of Georgetown University’s Catholic Identity Transformed a Campus Tradition.

“Georgetown’s American Studies Program emphasizes building connections — across disciplines and among students and faculty. As we celebrate the Program’s history, we hope that events like this will give our alumni the chance to renew those connections,” said Professor Sherry Linkon, director of the program.

Founded in 1969, the American Studies Program offers an interdisciplinary major that encourages students to ask critical questions about power, identity, and American culture.

The anniversary kickoff luncheon will be held at the Union Club of Boston on May 31, 2018.
