Current Baker Scholar and Alumnus Partner to Improve High School Investors Club
Baker Scholar Liz Schropp (C’21) recently partnered with alumnus Mike Scanlan (C’86), dean of administration at St. Benedict’s Prep School in Newark, NJ, to educate high school students about investment strategy as part of a student-run club. The membership in the club has tripled since it was first started last year due in part to the participation of Georgetown students.

College Alumni and Senior Make Award Winning Documentary in Hopes of Freeing Wrongfully Convicted Man
Johnsenia Brooks (C’20), Cecily Burge (C’21) and Austin Riddick (C’20) recently released their documentary, Walk Tall: A Story of Innocence and Wrongful Conviction, that details the conviction of Edward Martinez, a man serving a 55 year sentence for a crime he did not commit. The trio hopes that this documentary, which won the Beeck Center Award for Social Impact in 2020, will garner public support in the case for Martinez’s freedom and advance much needed criminal justice reform.

Working Together: Professor and Alumnus Co-Edit Book After Four-Year Collaboration
Peter C. Pfeiffer and Nathan T. Tschepik (C’18) co-edited Meanings of Modern Work in Nineteenth- and Twenty-First-Century German Literature and Film, which just appeared with Peter Lang Publishing’s peer-reviewed series German Studies in America. Pfeiffer, a professor in the Department of German, and Tschepik began working on this project when Tschepik was an undergraduate student at Georgetown.

Young Alumnus Continues Fight for LGBTQ, Civil Rights During Pandemic
LGBTQ youth advocate Trevor O’Connor (C’20) believes fighting for civil rights in the time of COVID-19 is more important than ever, no matter how it is done.
“A great analogy I’ve heard about advocacy during the current moment is that of a highway,” says O’Connor, an advocate for LGBTQ youth. “There are multiple lanes – frontline protesting, information gathering, research, being a shoulder to lean on, educating family members, donating, etc. – and it doesn’t matter what lane you’re in as long as you’re moving forward.”
