What is Capitol Law @ GU?
Capitol Law @ GU is an intensive, on-campus summer program for undergraduate students exploring a future in law.
Hosted at Georgetown University’s Capitol Campus in the heart of Washington, D.C., the program immerses students in constitutional and international law through courses taught by Georgetown faculty. Participants also engage directly with legal professionals from government, private practice, nonprofits, and academia—and gain insider exposure to elite legal careers in the nation’s capital.
The experience includes a guided visit to Georgetown University Law Center, where students will meet with GULC Admissions Dean Andrew Cornblatt and learn firsthand what it takes to succeed in law school.

Cost
The total cost for each 5-week Capitol Law @ Georgetown session is $18,968, which includes tuition for 8 credits and weekly lunches/breakout sessions with invited guests.
Capitol Law students are responsible for housing and other meals. Georgetown is not able to offer scholarships to visiting students.

Student applications to the Summer Institute will include:
- A 2-3 paragraph Statement of Interest (in which students explain why they would like to participate in the program)
- The name of a professor or dean who can serve as a reference
- Most recent copy of the student’s unofficial academic transcript

Review of applications will begin on March 6 and continue until all seats are filled. Applications will be evaluated by a committee of department faculty and admissions staff based on prior academic performance, the quality of the Statement of Interest, and completed recommendation forms.

FAQ
Will the Institute be held in person or online?
The Institute will be held in person on Georgetown’s Capitol Campus and at selected locations in the Washington, D.C metropolitan area.
Why should I apply?
The Institute offers undergraduate students an opportunity to learn more about what it means to practice law in Washington D.C. at the highest levels. Students will interact with Georgetown faculty, studying various components of public law and will also enjoy the opportunity to meet with accomplished legal professionals in private practice, government service, corporate law, public interest work and the judiciary. If you are considering a legal career and/or are interested in the academic study of law, we encourage you to apply to the Institute.
Are there any other application requirements or prerequisites?
There are no prerequisites for the program, although a basic understanding of the American political system is recommended, and you need to have a cumulative GPA to date of 3.0.
I know I need to identify a faculty member who can serve as a reference for me. Should I ask that person to serve as a reference before I put their name down?
Yes, it is a good idea to ask that person if they would be willing to serve as a reference for you before you include their name on your application.
Who will I meet and interact with at the Institute?
As part of the Institute’s Experience Component, you will participate in weekly meetings offering you the opportunity to interact with and hear from members of the state and federal judiciary, Georgetown University law professors, accomplished attorneys in private practice, government lawyers at the local and federal level, including counsel at the Department of Justice and on Capitol Hill, attorneys serving as in-house corporate counsel, attorneys working in public interest law, and law students currently attending T-14 schools. You will also meet with Andy Cornbatt, Dean of Admissions for Georgetown Law.
Are scholarships available?
Georgetown scholarships are not available to visiting students; visiting students should consult their home institutions about scholarship eligibility. Georgetown students should contact the Office of Student Financial Services.
Will my courses transfer to my home institution?
All transfer credits are at the discretion of your home institution. The institute courses are regular undergraduate course offerings, eligible for undergraduate degree credit at Georgetown. The institute director will be happy to answer questions about course content, learning goals, etc., as helpful.
What housing options are available to me?
Georgetown offers summer housing on both the Capitol Campus and Hilltop Campus (please note that all courses will take place at the Capitol Campus). For additional information, please contact summerhousing@georgetown.edu.

I have other commitments during the summer. Can I partially participate in the Institute?
You may not partially participate in the Institute. You are expected to attend classes and Experience Component meetings. Any outside commitments you may have, including but not limited to summer internships, cannot conflict with either class meetings or Experience Component events. If you wish to take one of the courses on an à la carte basis, you may do so through the Georgetown School of Continuing Studies, space permitting.
