Study by Psychology Professors Johnson and Phillips Shows Successes, Struggles of Students During Distance Learning
Professors in the Department of Psychology Anna Johnson, Ph.D., and Deborah Phillips, Ph.D., partnered with researchers at the University of Oklahoma on the Tulsa SEED Study, which follows a diverse group of children to understand the effects of attending Tulsa pre-K on their learning and development. The study surveyed a group of parents of first-graders both in the summer of 2020 and again in the summer of 2021 about their experiences of the pandemic during the 2019-2020 and 2020–2021 school years.

Maureen Tibbetts (C’21) and Adam Epstein-Shuman (C’22) Contribute to Happiness Research on Impact of Online Interactions During Peak of Social Distancing
At the height of social distancing in the United States, a team of researchers led by Kostadin Kushlev, Ph.D. and professor in the Department of Psychology, examined the effects of online interactions on individuals’ happiness. Undergraduates Maureen Tibbetts (C’21) and Adam Epstein-Shuman (C’22), who contributed to the study, found that while online social interactions with strong ties are associated with higher well-being, online interactions with strangers were related to lower well-being.

Innovative Book by Psychology Professor Provides New Links Between Science and Literature
Fathali Moghaddam, Ph.D., Georgetown Department of Psychology professor and editor of the Cambridge University Press book series on ‘Progressive Psychology,’recently published Shakespeare and the Experimental Psychologist through Cambridge University Press. The book combines scientific psychology with English literature to discuss thought experiments in selected Shakespeare plays and examine the central role of thought experiments in the natural sciences.

Study by Professor Finds Video Chat Helps Grandparents Maintain Relationships with Grandchildren, Diminishes Feelings of Isolation
A recent study found that video chat helped grandparents overcome social isolation during the pandemic as well as maintain a vital connection with their young grandchildren. Senior Proposes Legal Clinic for DC Youth at George Washington Law Through EDIJ Program
Caroline Jaipaul (C’21) is submitting a proposal to start a legal clinic at George Washington Law that will serve DC youth who are currently court-involved through oral and written advocacy and will strive to interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline in Washington. Jaipaul is completing this as part of her capstone project for her Education, Inquiry and Justice (EDIJ) minor.

Senior Advocates for Black Mothers Who Have Lost Children to Gun Violence
Psychology major Denzell Brown’s (C’21) research aims to provide aid to Black mothers who have lost children to gun violence in Washington, DC. The senior will continue to develop this project while he earns his PhD in counseling from Howard University so that he may improve the lives of Black mothers in the district.
